There's a private terrace and direct beach access: this delightful refuge ticks all boxes. As the name implies, access is down long stone steps. It's in Polruan village, next to the outstanding Fowey River, a natural deepwater harbour in the Polperro Heritage Coast of South Cornwall. When you've enjoyed enough splendid isolation, there are plenty of nearby choices for walking, day trips or beach days.

Overall the feel is comfortable, calm and unfussy with muted colours and natural wood furnishings. Views from the living room and bedroom are just as good as from the terrace, so relax together and watch the boat traffic: large ships squeezing into the harbour, yachts gliding by, and myriad small craft criss-crossing the clear waters. After a leisurely breakfast, descend the steps from the terrace, stroll on the beach… maybe decide to cross the river by ferry for lunch. Later, plan tomorrow's adventures over cocktails as the sun slips down behind Fowey.

In Polruan there are cafes, shops, a cheerful pub and a small village beach within 200 metres. Ride the ferry to Fowey for a wider choice of shopping and dining, plus galleries showcasing local artists. Seafood's fresh and local, from classic fish-and-chips to varied restaurant menus. Walk along the South West Coast Path for views of cliff and cove - discover the unspoilt Lantic Bay within 3 miles walk eastwards, or ramble 3 miles round Pont Pill inlet to Bodinnick's friendly pub.
