Lake Tahoe Cabin by Roberta Morrow

I am Roberta and I live near Seattle. For many years, I served on the Board of Directors of our Tahoe Cedars Property Owners Association. I started and edited the organization's newsletter, the Tahoma Tattler. I am retired, but continue to work as a volunteer and participate in several organizations. I have served in various capacities for these various organizations. I have also performed as a Scandinavian folk dancer and with a Nordic Women's Choir.
My daughter Terry now helps with managing our home, and my grandsons are learning about caring for our cabin and property as well.

Each year we make improvements...
2016: A concrete step onto the deck and a ramp. New bathroom lights and cabinets. Bear fencing to prevent break-ins.
2017: A programmable thermostat.
2018: A socket with 2 USB ports. A flat-screen Smart TV to go with the DVD player and VCR. Beach chairs.
2019: Safety features - 2 outdoor cameras, new fire extinguishers, new dual smoke/CO2 alarms, additional smoke alarms, and a battery backup for the router. Battery-operated lantern, rechargeable flashlights, and night lights in each bedroom. Motion-sensing outdoor lamps by each outside door. Keyless lock at the side door. A living room chair and footstool.

2024: Removed more dead trees. Expanded our Bear Fencing so that it can now be turned on while inside the cabin.

Why they chose this property
We purchased our cabin in 1979 because we loved to ski, and soon discovered that Tahoe is wonderful in every season! We are very attached to our little neighborhood and lived at Tahoe between years in San Francisco and Idaho.

We love the West Shore. We enjoy the sense of community and knowing our Tahoma neighbors. We can walk to cross-country tracks in Sugar Pine Point State Park as well as to Pine Lodge and the beach there. We like the stream profile at Taylor Creek and the beaches at D.L. Bliss State Park, Kiva Beach, Baldwin Beach and Pope Beach. The Vikingsholm at the end of Emerald Bay and Valhalla are also favorites.

Winter gives us a wonderland of snow with lots of area for play. In the spring, our yard near Oak Street blooms with many wild flowers. In summer, our own community park is a great spot to have a picnic while the kids enjoy the playground equipment, or listen to one of our local bands play a concert at the amplitheater. It is wonderful to be within walking distance of the lake, a grocery store, a restaurant, the post office, gelato and espresso, and a state park.

What makes this property unique
Our cabin sits on a parcel of 4 lots covering a bit over ½ acre, surrounded by open forest space. We have a great collection of literature about Tahoe: the birds, the trees, the flowers, where to find the wildflower hikes, the trails, the dog beaches and parks. Also, books about Tahoe's colorful history, and tall tales about the lake and its former inhabitants.

You'll notice the influence of my Norwegian, Swedish and Swiss heritage. Our wood-burning stove provides warmth and ambiance. The open living, dining, kitchen area makes hosting easy. Our bedrooms accommodate a variety of family arrangements. Our decks extend our living space into the outdoors.

I love the wonderful smell of the forest, the lovely summer temperatures, our yard with Insence Cedars, Jeffrey, Sugar, and Lodge Pole Pines, White and Red Firs and Alders. The easy walk to Sugar Pine Point State Park, the quiet West Shore, the short hike to the top of Eagle Rock for a bird's eye view of the lake, picking up the Sunday paper at the Tahoma Market, breakfast on the front deck while watching the world go by, walking our dog in the neighborhood and talking to the neighbors, watching old movies, inviting friends to visit while we're in town, the summer festivals, winter's Snowfest, driving around Emerald Bay, poking around the Vikingsholm and Valhalla, the stream profile at Taylor Creek and nature walks at DL Bliss State Park, hiking up to the tarns above Emerald Bay, horseback riding in Alpine Meadows or Camp Richardson, the hot springs in Nevada, the quiet fall season when the salmon are running, exploring near-by towns of Reno, Virginia City, Pyramid Lake, Tahoe City and Truckee, the great snow skiing where we have fabulous lake views and fun Apres Ski evenings. Above all, the beauty and peacefulness of the lake and the mountains!
